Q - Which domain extension should I choose?
A - Your choice of domain extension should ideally reflect your business type, although some people choose a particular extention because it is the only one that is "available" (not already registered) with their chosen domain name. However, availability aside, here are some of the commonly chosen extensions and the reasons for choosing them:
For international recognition, ".com" is the most well-known and most common choice of domain extension. It's particularly used in American websites and by big companies. This extension is followed in popularity by country-specific extensions, such as ".com.au" for Australia, ".co.uk" for the United Kingdom and so on.
In Australia, ".com.au" is the most popular domain extension. You need an ABN (Australian Business Number), ACN (Australian Company Number), BRN (state-based business registration number) or incorporation number to register a domain with a ".com.au" extension (i.e. you need to be an Australian company, registered business name or association).
The ".net" extension is generally less used than ".com", but many people consider it to be the second most valuable extension. It's often used by ISPs and those in technology-based businesses.
The ".org" extension is mainly used by organisations and non profits.
The ".biz" extension was created with the goal of having an extension explicitly for business and has the restriction that it can only be used for bona fide business purposes. It hasn't achieved the same sort of popularity as an extension as ".com" or ".net" and some people consider it to be a bit "slangy".
".info", like ".biz" is a newer type of extension and is designed to be topic-specific. It is meant to be used for information websites.
The ".id.au" domain extension is for use by individuals who are Australian citizens or residents.
The ".asn.au" domain extension is for use by incorporated associations, political parties, trade unions, sporting and special interest clubs.
